P5 - Respiration and Photosynthesis

How Fish Breathe

1. Watch the following video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUtajoVi8qw

Predict how they think the fish takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide.

 Get students to observe the specimen/video of fish head with the gills exposed. Get them to observe the gills and take note of the colour of the gills. Get them to discuss in their groups and record their predictions on how the fish breathe on the “The Compare Story” Worksheets (WS -

Gather the class together and show the “How Fish Breathe” video.

- If fish makes use of their gills for gaseous exchange, how do you think plants carry out their gaseous exchange?

How Plants Breathe

 Get students to observe the specimen of a prepared slide on the underside of the leaf with stomata under the microscope.  Get them to discuss in their groups, predict how plants take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide and record their predictions in “The Compare Story”

Worksheets (WS -1(S) / (F)). Encourage them to discuss in their groups how they think the stomata help in the plant gaseous exchange.

 Gather the class together and show the “Gaseous Exchange in Plants” video on how the plants take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. Stop video at 0:40s.

 Allow students to discuss how gaseous exchange takes place in plants and compare their discussions with the predictions earlier. Allow students to amend their predictions if needed. Get them to explain this gaseous exchange in their groups and record in (WS-1).

The Compare Story

- Recall how Man takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide.

 Get a student to share and explain to the class how gaseous exchange takes place in humans.

 Get students to discuss in their groups, the comparison among how a fish, plant and a mammal take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
